How to Connect to the Network Using the VPN Client

Below are the instructions for connecting to the SMCM Network via VPN.

(NOTE: Be sure to have an up-to-date antivirus program installed on your machine. The Junos Pulse Client will not work if you do not have one.)

  1. Download the installation file for your system type.

    (NOTE: If you are unsure of your system type download the 32-bit version.)

  2. Once it is finished downloading, open the installation package

    then click Run.

  3. Follow the on-screen instructions for the Pulse Secure Setup Wizard.
    1. Click Next

    2. Click Install

    3. Wait for it to finish installing

    4. When it is finished installing click Finish

  4. When the setup is finished there will be a new icon in your taskbar at the bottom right of your screen that looks like white "s".

    or

  5. Click on the icon, then select Open Pulse Secure

  6. When the window opens, click the plus sign to the right of the word Connections to begin creating the connection to the SMCM VPN.

  7. In the next window, make sure Policy Secure (UAC) or Connect Secure (VPN) is chosen in the Type drop down. Next type in SMCM VPN in the Name field to name the connection (or use any name you wish to give it). Next type in remote.smcm.edu in the Server URL field and click Add.

  8. Anytime you want to connect to the VPN you can either
    1. Launch the Pulse Secure Client from the taskbar and click on Connect.

    2. Click on the icon in the taskbar, hover over SMCM VPN (remote.smcm.edu), and click Connect

  9. The first time you connect you will be prompted for your credentials. For the User Name field enter your full SMCM email address ending with @smcm.edu followed by your password in the Password field. Check the Save Settings box and click Connect

  10. You can verify that you are connected in the following ways
    1. From within the Pulse Secure client, under Connections, the profile for SMCM VPN should be listed with a green check mark and a button with the word Disconnect next to it.

    2. Another way to tell if you are connected or not is the icon in the taskbar will have a green up-arrow next to it if you are connected.

  11. To disconnect from the VPN simply
    1. Select Disconnect from within the Pulse Secure client

    2. Click on the icon in the taskbar, hover over SMCM VPN (remote.smcm.edu), and click Disconnect

Download the installation package here.

  1. Once it is finished downloading, open the installation package

    then open the file titled PulseSecure.pkg.

  2. Follow the on-screen instructions for the Pulse Secure Installer.
    1. Click Continue

    2. Click Install

    3. Wait for it to finish installing. When the Installer is finished you will see this window pop up for a brief moment then disappear

    4. Click Close

  3. There will now be a icon in your taskbar near the top right of your screen that looks like a green and white "s" inside of a black circle. Click on the icon, then select Open Pulse Secure

  4. When the new Pulse Secure Connections window opens, click the plus sign at the bottom left of the window to begin creating the connection to the SMCM VPN.

  5. In the next window, make sure Policy Secure (UAC) or Connec... is chosen in the Type drop down. Next type in SMCM VPN in the Name field to name the connection (or use any name you wish to give it). Next type in remote.smcm.edu in the Server URL field and click Add.

  6. Anytime you wish to connect to the VPN you can either

    2. Click on the icon in the taskbar, hover over SMCM VPN (or the name you gave it), and click Connect

  8. To disconnect from the VPN at any time either
    1. Select Disconnect from within the Pulse Secure application

    2. Click on the icon in the taskbar, hover over SMCM VPN (or the name you gave it), and click Disconnect
