Updating your Browser

Browsers are programs that allow you to access websites and web applications. This page shows the different options that you have for browsers, how to check the version you are running, and how to update your browser.

Internet Explorer (IE) is Microsoft's proprietary web browser.  It comes standard on PCs and the newest version is 11, and can be found on their website.

How Do I Check the Version I Am Using?

PC

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. Click the Gear Icon in the upper right hand corner.
  3. Select About Internet Explorer.
  4. A window displaying the current version you are using will pop up.

How Do I Update From an Older Version or Install a New Browser?

To update Internet Explorer or install it new onto your computer, please go to the Internet Explorer Download page. If you are using Blackboard, do not upgrade to Internet Explorer 11, this has been known to cause errors in Blackboard.

Safari is Apple's proprietary web browser.  It comes standard on Apple devices (Macbook, ipod touch, iphone, ipad).  The newest version is 7.0, and can be found on their website.

  1. Open Safari.
  2. Click the drop down menu for Safari in the upper left hand corner.
  3. Select About Safari.
  4. A window displaying the current version you are using will pop up.

Firefox is developed by Mozilla, and can be used on a variety of platforms (PC, Mac, Linux).  It is an example of open source software, which means that it can be downloaded by anyone, and the source code is available to those who wish to improve, enhance, or customize the program to their liking.  The most recent version is 43, and can be found on their website.

  3. Select About Firefox.

Google Chrome, or more commonly just Chrome is a relatively new web browser developed by Google, and is available on a variety of platforms.  Unlike Firefox, Chrome is not open source, but is free, and features many enhancements that streamline the internet experience.  The most recent version is 34.0.1847.116, and can be found on their website.

  3. Select About Google Chrome.
